Polynesian Wedding

Cette activitée de Maohi Nui est 50% Aventure et 50% Romantisme.

For the couple who wishes to celebrate their love in the Polynesian tradition, MAOHI NUI offers different romantic options. Weddings, vow renewals or marriage anniversaries are celebrated by a non denominational priest, with no official power. The priest is dressed in an elegant traditional costume. Polynesian dancers and musicians are normally part of the ceremony, unless the couple prefers a more simple celebration.

The ceremony starts usually late afternoon, in a setting made of coconut leaves and hibiscus flowers, on the Matira beach or on an private island (motu). The language used is French or English, depending on the preference of the couple. A small part of the ceremony is done in the Tahitian language.

Details of the ceremony for the “traditional” and the “simple” wedding:
The couple wears the white pareo that we give them. The priest leads the ceremony and declares the husband “tané” and the wife “vahiné” under the Polynesian tradition, before giving them a Tahitian name. The couple exchanges flower leis and crowns, which symbolizes harmony, before receiving the wedding certificate from the priest. The certificate is made on a fine peace of tree bark called “tapa”. Songs, music and dances punctuate the entire ceremony, lasting about 30 minutes.

Polynesian Wedding on Matira Beach

Traditional

Polynesian wedding on Matira beach

The traditional ceremony takes place on Matira beach. A group of musicians and dancers are present. Two “warriors” normally pick up the couple directly at their bungalow. If the bungalow is over-water, they use a small outrigger canoe (with paddles). The couple wearing the white pareo is taken to the beach, where the priest and the entire group of dancers and musicians are waiting for them.

The “warriors” carry them within their arms to the beach. The couple meets the priest, and the ceremony starts. Songs, Polynesian music and dances punctuate the ceremony, in beautiful harmony.

Duration of the ceremony: 30 minutes.

Included: two white pareos, two flower leis and crowns, one certificate made on a tapa.
