Polynesian Wedding

For the couple who wishes to celebrate their love in the Polynesian tradition, MAOHI NUI offers different romantic options. The wedding, vows renewal or marriage anniversary is celebrated by a non denominational priest, with no official power. The priest is dressed in an elegant traditional costume. Polynesian dancers and musicians are normally part of the ceremony (“traditional” wedding), unless the couple prefers to have the priest and one musician only (“simple” wedding), or the priest only (“intimate” wedding).

Details on the ceremony

The ceremony is celebrated in a setting of coconut leaves and hibiscus flowers, on Matira beach, aboard an outrigger canoe or on an island (motu). The spoken language is French, English or Spanish, depending on couple’s preference. A small part of the ceremony is in Tahitian.

The couple wears the white pareo that we give them. The priest leads the ceremony and declares the husband “tané” and the wife “vahiné” following the Polynesian tradition, before giving them a Tahitian name. The couple exchanges flower leis and crowns, which symbolizes harmony, before receiving the wedding certificate from the priest. The certificate is made on a fine peace of tree bark called “tapa”. If it’s a “traditional” wedding, songs, music and dances punctuate the entire ceremony.
